Here are a few “Tips” from our staff to help you with maintenance in your home:
Food disposal:
- Run a lot of hot water after every use, this will carry food waste and grease down the line, which is a major cause of stopped up kitchen sink drain lines.

- Run ice through your food disposal to clean grinding chamber and sharpen blades. ~ ~ Bill
- Slice up a lemon and run it through your food disposal to help eliminate odor and freshen the room with a citrus fragrance. ~ ~ Susan
A/C drain line: Pour bleach into your air conditioner condensation drain line to keep line free of algae build up, which is a major cause of stopped up a/c drain lines. ~ ~ Linda
Chemicals in toilet tank: Do not use chlorination products in your toilet tank, they shorten the life span of rubber flappers, plastic and other rubber parts, which causes your toilet to run or flush on it’s own. A seat rim clip on style chlorinator is a better choice, make sure it is the plastic style which actually “Clips” onto the seat rim securely. ~ ~ Ken
Flooding safety tip: Do not leave your home while your toilet is filling, if there is any blockage, your house could flood possibly causing thousands of dollars in damage. ~ ~ Dirk
Calcium & Mineral build up: Vinegar, the best household product for calcium and mineral build up. Use vinegar on fixture to remove build-up. Soak aerators and showerheads in vinegar to keep then flowing freely. ~ ~ Bill
Shut-off valve maintenance: For maintenance of your emergency shut off valve near your water meter, keep grass pruned back around the valve and turn it off and on a few times a year to keep the it from freezing up with mineral deposits. ~ ~ Bryan
Water Heater: Flush your water heater to help keep calcium and mineral deposits from building up inside the tank. This will help your water heater run more efficiently and ensure a longer life span of the unit. ~ ~ Susan
Washing machine: Use Liquid detergents in your washer to help keep powder build up from occurring in the drain line, which is a major cause of problems. Remember: That which was once a solid will always become a solid again. ~ ~ Linda
High water bill prevention: Repair leaking toilets, the number one culprit of high water bills! They can also fill up septic systems, which could cause stoppages and/or flooding. ~ ~ Ken
Chemical corrosion: When using pesticides, read labels or ask your pest control professional before using pesticides under sinks, the chemicals can be corrosive to metal parts. ~ ~ Susan
Vacation time: When you are going to be away from home for an extended period of time, turn off the water at the emergency shut off valve near the water meter and turn your water heater to down low/vacation setting. ~ ~ Bill
